| Background and History Our site traces its roots back to 1989 with the release of the award-winning documentary Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes To Life®. Produced by San Francisco filmmakers Lew Rothgeb and Richard Hall, in association with Baseball Legend Video, the program took nearly two years to complete. After intense research, Mickey was chosen to become the first subject of their new videography™ program format. The videography™ program was first truly autobiographical program. There is no narrator, the interviewer is never seen, and interviewer's questions aren't heard. It is truly a "self-told" story, and Mickey was perfect for the format. An idol to a generation of fans, Mickey's stories had become legendary. His on-field heroics and off-field escapades offered a rich variety of material. So much so that many of Mickey's stories went unreleased in the original hour-long program. The video became an immediate and enduring success. A BILLBOARD Magazine top-ten bestseller in both 1989 and 1990, Public Television began broadcasting the program in 1994. It was shown on over 70 stations across the country to several million people, and is a perennial favorite among Mantle fans. A companion volume was written to coincide with the Public Television broadcasts. A line of merchandise bearing the program's logos and artwork was also created. It includes a variety of clothing items such as jackets, T-shirts, and caps. This merchandise is displayed in our Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes To Life® Store. In 1998 the first Companion Photo Calendar - Fact Book was released. It includes 13 monthly feature photos (suitable for framing) and over 100 more photos in the monthly calendar grids. It also contains hundreds of facts, stats, quotes and events from throughout Mickey's life. Calendars continued each year through 2001. While creating the 1998 Companion Photo Calendar - Fact Book we decided to build a web site dedicated to the program and Mickey. Our goal was to provide information about all aspects of Mickey's life and career, as well as a Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes To Life® Store where fans could purchase a variety of Mickey merchandise. We wanted our site to reflect the vast storehouse of information accumulated about Mickey during the program's production, much of which is included on our Deluxe Edition DVD. To that end we compiled a wide range of material on a variety of topics. In fact, it has become the most complete and comprehensive source of Mickey Mantle information anywhere. Everyone who accesses our web page, from the youngster preparing his first school report about the Mick to the most ardent fan, will find something they are sure to enjoy. |
