Mickey was timed rounding the bases in a blazing 13 seconds! The first time Manager Casey Stengel timed Mickey rounding the bases during spring training Casey thought his watch was broken. He had Mickey run the bases twice more to make certain he had the right time. |

Stealing bases is very hard on a player physically. With power like Mickey's, the Yankees didn't want him to get hurt stealing a base. Also, the Yankees teams that Mickey played on were primarily power teams. They didn't need to steal a lot of bases because they had so many power hitters. When you have so many players who can knock the ball out of the park and score runs with a single swing of the bat, it's counterproductive to take a chance stealing a base when getting caught can take you out of the inning. |
