Mickey's first pinch-hit homer came on July 6, 1953 against the Philadelphia Athletics in Philadelphia. It was a grand slam hit off Athletics' pitcher Frank Fanovich and led the Yankees to a 10-5 win. It was Mickey's only career pinch-hit grand slam.

Mickey hit a grand slam on October 4, 1953 against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field to lead the Yanks to an 11-7 win in game five of the World Series. The pitcher was Monk Meyer. It was only the fourth grand slam in World Series history, and the only one Mickey hit in World Series play.
